Ryan Giggs tells court night in cell was ‘worst experience’ of his life
Ryan Giggs broke down in tears in court Wednesday, saying a night in jail was "the worst experience of his life."
The former Manchester United and Welsh player got emotional when asked to describe the night he was arrested for headbutting then-girlfriend Kate Greville on Nov. 1, 2020 .
A jury at Manchester Criminal Court said Giggs was taken to Pendleton Police Station in Salford between 10:00 and 11:00 pm after an alleged attack.
When asked by Giggs' attorney, Chris Daw QC, what it was like to spend the night in a cell, Giggs replied, "It's the worst experience of my life."
As the jury watched, he whined on the witness stand, taking a moment for him to regain his composure before continuing his remarks. He previously told the court he was "confused and scared" after being accused of headbutting his girlfriend with a cell phone during a "tug-of-war."
He said he didn't headbutt Kate Greville on purpose, but accidentally "bumped her head."
Giggs provided evidence for the second day, stating that Greville tried to pull his cell phone out of his pocket when they met face to face in the kitchen.
"It became more and more aggressive. We faced each other. It was like a tug-of-war and then we hit our heads," he said. He said that Greville had fallen behind her and that he "saw very clearly that she was injured."
Greville, 36, said at trial that Giggs put her hands on her shoulders and slammed her head into her face.
Giggs was asked how he felt when Greville accused him of headbutting her and said she would call the police. seemed very different and I was scared, so confused and scared.
Giggs' attorney, Chris Daw QC, asked the former Welsh manager: 'Did you put your hand on Kate's shoulder and violently and deliberately slammed her head in the face? "No, I didn't," said Giggs.
"Have you ever done that?" Daw asked. "No," Giggs replied.
Former Welsh manager, 48, denies assaulting Greville that actually caused her physical harm, and joint assault of her sister Emma Greville at her home in Worsley on November 1, 2020 is doing.
